VIRGIN
ISLANDS
Back
in the late 70's and early 80's a crew of surfers went on a sailing
expedition in search of uncrowded surf. With little more than charts
and a compass onboard they cast off to a region that held stories
of secluded pointbreaks where during peak winter months large north
swells would peel off for over a hundered yards. Overlooking a torquoise
colored bay were lush gardens of canefields that offered a local
fishing fleet protection from the often harsh tradewinds. For surfers
this translated to perfect offshore conditions. Years later, as
some of those passed on, their offspring, with equal ambition, followed
in their paths. Recently I joined Dylan and Jose Graves and friends
to a surf paradise that their father Lewis had relished twenty some
odd years earlier aboard those Sundek missions.

BAHAMAS
SLATER
'n FRIENDS' SECRET BAHAMAS GET-A-WAY (featured in NRG 2000, Surf NRG
vol. 8 Video) While back home in Florida enjoying his sabatical from
the World Tour 6X World Champion Kelly Slater and his longtime friend
Matt Kechele hoped on board an expedition to the Outer Islands of
the Bahamas. Stretching along 760 miles and located just off the southeast
coast of Florida the Bahamas are comprised of over 700 islands and
2,000 cays. With the combined knowledge of Dan Davidson of Flying
Fish Tours and seasoned pilot Reggie Parnell we were turned onto some
of the secret treasures that are hidden along the Bahama island chain.
On board for two seperate journeys were South Florida surfing twins
Kyle and Bryce Cohen. Both expeditions portrayed just a hint of what
potential lies along the Outer Reefs. The following pics are from
our expeditions:

PANAMA
Donovan
Frankenreiter and his Realm posse bake in the sun in one of the
lesser traveled regions in Central America. They surf, they fish,
they play guitars while kickin' back in the heat of the tropical
ozone. Where a local ride means hitchin' up with da local pedro
and swingin' him a buck for a lift down the beach on his horse or
hoping onboard a boat trip with an appetite for secluded surf. As
Donovan drops a line and trolls to the island he discovers "you
can't count your fish until they're filleted" as he battles a beauty
of a dolphin. Local surfer Cholito is ripping, we be jammin' with
the Board (of Tourism), and checking the surf captures the realm
of this segment.

CARIBBEAN
The
Caribbean saw a bit of swell activity during the early months of the
new millenium. We chased a swell down south to Puerto Rico and hooked
up with some of the islands top talent for a Caribbean expression
session. We also dropped in on the Independence Day Classic Surfing
Event held on the island of Barbados where the Jersey Devil, Dean
Randazzo, took out a fired up Tod Morcom in the finals at the legendary
